February 9, 2025
I hope everyone has had a great weekend so far. The snow last night certainly came down fast! I know the Super Bowl can make for a late night and some tired eyes on Monday morning. Enjoy the game and all the fun that goes along with it! We have one more week before we get a nice break in February. This week won’t be without its weather challenges, so we’ll just have to wait and see. Friday, February 14th, we will be hosting our First Annual Weston’s Got Talent, a school wide talent show. We also have an early dismissal to make up for the missed professional development on February 3rd. Thank you to everyone for your flexibility. I have attached the schedule HERE.
Thank you to our PTO Staff Appreciation co-chairs, Mrs. Masters and Mrs. Shaffer for the sweet treats and granola provided to our staff in appreciation for all they do for our kids. This is always such a welcome surprise for everyone and a bright spot in the week!
Black History Month
We honor Black History Month with our displays in the library and a selection of books highlighted for students to choose from. The 2025 Black History Month theme: African Americans, and Labor, focuses on the various and profound ways that work and working of all kinds – free and unfree, skilled, and unskilled, vocational and voluntary – intersect with the collective experiences of Black people.
Superintendent Search
This Thursday, February 13th, the Board of Education is seeking input from our students on the qualities they are looking for in our next superintendent. Students are welcome to join the discussion with our search consultant in the Main Office Conference Room from 11:30am-12pm. Any student interested should email Mrs. Herford: jenniferherford@westonps.org. Students may get lunch prior to the start of the group and bring it to the conference room. The absence will be marked as a School Activity for students wishing to join. If students have an assessment and are unable to join, they can provide feedback to Mrs. Herford via email.
Jazz Ensemble
WHS Jazz students participated in a clinic with jazz saxophonist David DeJesus. Students were coached on music for their upcoming performances and enjoyed playing for him!
Scholastic Awards
In my haste last weekend I transcribed the name of one of our award winners incorrectly. Congratulations to Grace Lu for her three(3) selections!!: Baby Greens, poem (Gold Key); rose wasn’t abel, poem (Honorable Mention); Erosion, short story (Gold Key); Shirley’s Temple, short story (Gold Key);
Seniors - Class of 2025
Our Graduation date has been set! The class of 2025 will be graduating at 6 pm on Friday, June 13, 2025, mark your calendars. We have also set the date for the senior class trip to Six Flags in Massachusetts for Thursday, June 5th.
The senior class was emailed a link to order their cap and gown. Please remind your seniors to place their order if they haven’t already done so. Please do not order for your student before checking with them, we are receiving duplicate orders. They just have to click the link, create an account, and place the order. The cap and gown cost is covered by the class dues collected annually. The last day to do this is February 14th, 2025!
Seniors also recently met with Ms. Green to discuss their internship. Please see the College and Career Center website for information on the senior internship and expectations. Students are responsible for finding their own internship and getting it approved. If students are having difficulty finding one, please contact Ms. Green. Internship placement information is due by April 11th.
Juniors - Math SAT Help
This year the SAT is in digital format. Come to these help sessions and learn tips for using the desmos calculator, practice questions on the Collge Board Bluebook interface and get a tailored practice plan to your needs. This free resource can be an invaluable experience for our juniors. The sessions will be offered Mondays and Wednesdays from 2/26-3/19, email Mrs. Rapoport to sign up: rileyrapoport@westonps.org.
Company Advertisements
Company is selling 1⁄4 page, 1⁄2 page, or full-page ads in either black and white or color- they have pre-made templates to make things easy, or if you have your own artwork, they’ll happily print that as well!
The money raised through advertising goes to support Company, the theater club at Weston High School. The shows bring in hundreds of audience members of all ages, and they print 600-700 programs per production- many people will see your ad! Please complete this form to place an ad in the program and support theater at Weston High School. Payment details are included on the form. The deadline for submission is February 28th. Please email averymacrae@students.westonps.org with any questions!
Library Learning Commons - Cell Phone Daycare
We have a new paraprofessional in the library who will be starting soon to fill the role of Mrs. Nice who has left to go do her student teaching in Library Media Studies. Mrs. Nicole Pidgeon will be joining Ms. Swezey in the coming weeks. Ms. Nice and Ms. Swezey worked together on developing a “Cell Phone Day Care”. In the weeks leading up to midterms students had asked them to “watch” or hold their phones while they studied. This gave them the great idea to create little cell phone cots complete with little blankets to keep those phones snug so students can maximize their productivity when they’re in the library. This is completely voluntary and an opportunity for students to create their own best habits when studying and getting work done! We encourage everyone to give it a try!!
Midterm Survey Results
As you know we tried something different with our midterm schedule this year. We then surveyed students and staff during PACT to get some feedback. Overall, the schedule was appreciated by both students and staff, with some minor adjustments. We’ll work on our finals schedule taking into consideration this feedback. The finals schedule will be released after we have made it through the February weather. Look for the schedule to come out sometime in mid-March.
Scholarship opportunity Class of 2025
Sharing an exciting scholarship opportunity for students—the New England Service Scholarships, offered by the Red Sox Foundation. This program recognizes 100 high school seniors committed to community service and academic excellence.
Selected students from Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont will receive a $1,000 scholarship to support their education. As applications open in early March, we would love and greatly appreciate your support in spreading the word to eligible students.
In addition to the scholarship, recipients will participate in a service project in Boston before being honored on the field at Fenway Park before the Friday, June 27th game against the Toronto Blue Jays at 7:10 pm. The application opens on March 3rd: https://www.redsoxfoundation.org/servicescholarships/ This opportunity is open to all 12th-grade students in New England.
Important Reminder!
A reminder about the delivery policy (taken directly from the student handbook). To reduce the number of visitors on our campus and ensure the safety of our students and staff, deliveries of any kind must be directly related to school business and approved by the building administration. Food deliveries will not be permitted on the Weston Public Schools campus. Failure to comply with this expectation will result in confiscation of the delivered item(s) and a 1-hour detention. Weston High School food services provide healthy, nutritious, and delicious lunch and morning snack options. We kindly ask our families to refrain from sending food and beverage deliveries to our students during the day.
Pickup & Dropoff
A reminder to please continue to use the access road for picking up and dropping off students. We also must keep the fire lanes clear on each side of the crosswalk, especially at the end of the day, with so many students pouring out of the building. We want to make sure we aren’t inhibiting anyone’s line of sight, especially our security guards, as they man the crosswalk. In addition, please make sure you do not use any parking lots to drop off students. I have recently received some feedback that parents are parking in student parking spots while dropping off their students. Please understand that this creates a lot of confusion in the parking lot AND makes the student whose space you park in late! Thank you to all who support our students' safe entrance and exit.
Communication Protocol
Please remember we have a Communication Protocol to help you navigate the common occurrences in the daily lives of students, families, and staff. For many of your concerns, this protocol will let you know how to proceed.
