Assembly Information for 11/15

Posted Date: 11/14/2024

November 14, 2024

Dear WHS Families,

We are looking forward to the program our school team has prepared for our assembly this Friday. We have some incredible students who have led the work and used their voice for this very important conversation. I have had a few requests from parents asking if they were able to attend the assembly. When we plan assemblies we look to provide the most engaging and safe atmosphere possible for our students. To that end, the program will only be available to students and staff in the building. After the assembly we will share additional information with families including the videos that were shared with our students. Below is the agenda for the assembly:

Taking a Stance Against Antisemitism Assembly:

Goal of the assembly:

  1. Emphasize the severity of the hate-based incident and the categorization as a hate crime.

  2. Educate students on the significance of the swastika and antisemitism.

  3. Provide guidance on how to respond to and report similar incidents in the future.

The Following Organizations Will Be Presenting:

  • Members of the JSU Board

    • Speaking on behalf of Jewish community at WHS

    • Introduce and thank guest speakers

  • Rabbi Friedman - Senior Rabbi of Temple Israel Westport

    • Speaks on behalf of the local Jewish community, sharing how incidents like this affect the Jewish people and the broader community

  • Erika Brunwasser - ADL Representative (Associate Regional Director, ADL CT)

    • Educate the audience on the history and evolution of the swastika, the rise of Nazism, the Holocaust, and the enduring nature of antisemitism

  • Senator Blumenthal - Video Message

    • Explains the legal gravity of the hate crime and shares how the incident impacts him personally as a Jewish politician

  • Mr. Andy Sarkany - Holocaust Survivor

    • Video message describing his experiences and the impact of hateful words and actions.

Thank you for your support as we continue to foster an environment where everyone belongs and all are valued.

Kindly,

Meghan
